2017 marks the 8th Annual Waikiki Steel Guitar Festival and the 1st annual Waikiki Steel Guitar Week. The Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki will offer weeklong steel guitar entertainment during the week of July 10-15, 2017, culminating with the festival's nightly ho'olaule'a pageants on Friday and Saturday, July 14-15, 2017. Performances will be showcased on the center's Royal Grove stage.
Monday through Thursday entertainment will include hour-long performances between 6-7 P.M. and will be hosted by Harry B. Soria. The Friday and Saturday ho'olaule'a pageants begin at 5:30 P.M. and will showcase five different steel guitar masters each evening. Hosts for these programs will be Harry B. Soria and Kimo Kahoano.
This year's event will again precede the annual Roy Sakuma 'Ukulele Festival Hawaii which will be held at Kapi'olani Park on Sunday, July 16, 2017. This year's festival is presented by the Royal Hawaiian Center and produced by HIMELE - The Hawaii Institute for Music Enrichment and Learning Experiences. All Waikiki Steel Guitar Week events are free and open to the public.
This year's program as previously announced has changed. The Tuesday and Wednesday 6-7 P.M. performances have been swapped, with Greg Sardinha and Po'okela appearing on Tuesday and the Casey Olsen Trio appearing on Wednesday. Also, Eddie Palama has replaced Owana Salazar in the Saturday evening ho'olaulea.
